Meet Verna

~ Verna ~
I am Verna. I live in Spokane Valley with my husband, John, and our two miniature Schnauzers Rudy and Jessee. In my previous life I worked for Safeway as a file maintenance clerk (pricing coordinator is a more accurate job description). After 30 years I decided to take an early retirement so I could do something less stressful. John retired at about the same time from Central Valley School District.

In this life I am a recycled mother which means I get to do all the same things with my grandkids, Emily and Noah that I did with my kids, Carrie and Grover, but I'm awake for it this time around. (I worked nights all those years Carrie and Grover were growing up). I am very lucky and have all my immediate family and my acquired families nearby. I have been able to care for my wonderful grandkids all through the "SPONGE YEARS." No, not the Sponge Bob years, although that probably also applies. I'm talking about the years when their minds absorb everything they see or hear. It is such a joy to watch them grow. Everyday brings fun, new experiences we all can share for years to come.

At one time (in my working life), I had many hobbies: gardening, woodworking, painting, sewing, knitting, and of course reading. Now that I'm retired I only have time for a few of those things. I'm not sure how that works. There have always been pets. At one time there were two dogs, two cats, two cockatiels, and two very prolific love birds (they had twenty-one babies in one year). We also had a pond with koi and goldfish. {Whew!} How was there time for all of that? John and I also enjoy camping and taking walks with the dogs and granddogs if they are here for a sleepover.

Reading has always been my great escape. I like to read historical novels as well as mysteries, science fiction, fantasy and adventure stories. Some of my favorite authors are John Irving, Stephen King, Tad Williams (Otherland Series), Clive Barker, and Kathleen O'Neal Gear with Michelle Gear (People of the Wolf, etc., a series about how ancient peoples might have lived).

Books I have read include:

Far Pavilions...M.M. Kaye
A Fine Balance...Rohinton Mistry
A Prayer for Owen Meany...John Irving
The Way the Crow Flies...Ann-Marie MacDonald
Noble House...James Clavell
Birds without Wings...Louis D. Bernieres
